Heroes and Villains: Day 6

Silver Surfer Reflects

Everyone loves a good prophecy
until they hear the trumpet

closing in, first echo, then Doppler
finally the melody. Belushi isn't coming

back to lead the band down the alley.
You knew from the start

what the gods had in mind.
Everybody has a day

when time or cancer or too much
fish food teaches them the great

moot point. How we're devoured
is a footnote. Most of the universe

goes selfish. I did too, in the strangest
way, till  rogue wave washed me

into leagues of kindness. Lord, you made me
a mirror--what then but rebel,

a month at a time, four-color
victories in a fate-heavy globe. Progress

could be true if you can't wait
to see it. I've gone too far

this time.
