Gray Tree

First, her  eyes gave up color, shuffled
the present to page-ten halftone.

She found the tree and tracked
the descent of each leaf, filled

marble books with shorthand
noting each departure. When the autumn

of things came for her summercamp
love it was already gone, alive

in the sap of compass smiles.
Each bough a parenthesis

nesting that bright memory aside.
