Untitled (Red)

His and hers towels on the master rack. His
above hers, catalog red. The red from a fresh cut
or the symbolism of a flag. Hers the faded
same. Soft edges on both. Age isn't
the story. No single, accidental betrayal,
no violent bleach spots on the flat peach field.
The light behind them is the same, no matter
what they believe they remember.
She has done more work. She has washed
it out faithfully.

after Mark Rothko, "Untitled (Red)"
