Beast of Burden

At night, the magus cracks the gate
and the heifer tramps in from pasture.
No charm to it. Faith alone
the little barn waits, warm,
a plate of groats and clean water.

This is what the old man always wanted:
a little cream for his coffee and to be
believed. Worth a handful of magic.
That trip was meant for a brave Jack-boy,
gold and story enough to dower
any future. Fair trade for the roan cow

that would have starved without
some wondrous turn. The magus strokes
her suede muzzle, like always,
shuts the heavy door. No need
for a vine to heaven. In time
the future will grow his own.
