30:30 2014, Day 6

Sleep

For the grandfathers who learned
fire, dusk was the halftime whistle
when hunter and prey changed ends.

Why do we drown at end of day,
simmer in bone-stock when the danger
peaks? Why shut eyes when sky blinds?

The first ones who copied hope
to wall with a smudge of chalk
or crushed hawberry knew--

or guessed, if we call it faith:
Mind is the biggest cat. It will kill
the body when it bores of playing.
