Darkness

Caution. Always caution
with words that describe
the absence of one thing.

Find me another worry
with so much real estate
in a lifetime. The world

brings you around to it
at the end of day, and cold
months give it dominion.

When stars give up,
the crumble into universal
disasters, sucking light

into nowhere like a thirsty
storm drain. With a little tape
and blackout curtains

you can make any room
the darkest place possible.
Eyelids, for Christ sake--

an organ just to bring our first fear
to the sense of sight. Milliseconds
of terror with every blink; the long

denial of light before sleep.
It puts you in your place--
properly fearful

to feel even a bit like God
before He decided the universe
needed making.

  2. You're the second person to recommend something from Cabinet very recently... I really need to look deeper into it.
