with arms full of grocery or toddlers,
your car will make it home with
the LOW FUEL lamp on the whole way.

If you spare an ant, the next
bag of Ruffles won't have
the gross green freak chip.

If you clean the sink strainer
in the kitchen at work, slowing
gravity with the jetsam of everyone
else's--God, let it be coffee
or toastcrumbs--then a table
will open up as your party of eight
walks in at 7:34 on a Friday.

If you patch a crack in the sidewalk,
it will not somewhere heal
a mother's back. But her daughter
will call her, and you will find
in the cabinet a perfectly good
bottle of storebrand Tylenol
you forgot you bought.

If you fix the copy machine,
God will remember the rainbow
and stay His hand from deleting
our thankless, teeming species
for one more day.
