Poem for Mac Daddy

Some of them Try to Rhyme

This is what we were born to do: back
away so slowly someone far off
might think we approach. Like a scarecrow
to shoo the future. Absurd
is a concept invented to milk
the venom of defiance and culture
its remedy. Who questions the harmless
tyranny of cardinal direction? Call it jokes,
vanity, child's play. A boy dare not
piece together a starter thesis that fashion
is unworthy of him, or he unworthy
of fashion. He should stay tongue-tied,
nothing like Saint Andrew pleading to die
upon the modest saltire, nor Malcolm
crossing out his assignment. Unchecked,
he will jump to other rebellion, ending
at the first: to question the word.
It will not do. Recall Lot's wife, turning back
to witness total war. The Maker cannot stand
another bad creation.
